After several hours of research, I have selected for you the 6 best laptops for children on the market.
In my opinion, the most interesting investment is on the side of the Acer Spin 11 CP311-1HN, an 11-inch reversible and touch-sensitive model, directly supplied with a stylus and having a small weight and a long battery life.
If you want to know more about my selection criteria and how to choose the best laptop for a kids, I invite you to read my buying guide at the end of the article.
The Best Cheap Child Laptops
1. Dell Chromebook 11 3180: The Best Cheap
The very first computer in my selection is, like many others, a Chromebook. And if you want to know more about the specificity of these machines, I refer you to this article or my buying guide.
The particularity of this Chromebook is that it has been specifically designed for use in school environments (in the USA, schools are equipped with more and more computers for day-to-day learning), which is seen in many levels.
First of all, with its (very) solid construction. The case is made of plastic, but it stands out for its robustness. Its matte coating has the advantage of not hanging fingerprints. All around, there is a rubber shock-resistant coating, which allows it to withstand small falls.
The sealed keyboard has been designed to resist splashing. It is also rather comfortable for an 11-inch computer keyboard, with keys spaced enough to limit typing errors.
The touch screen is an asset, in that it allows openness to more creativity, but also facilitates collaboration between students, each can easily interact with the fingertip. It is covered with a glass Corning Gorilla Glass that protects it perfectly against the risk of scratches.
The screen can open 180 ° and thus be laid flat, to allow the simultaneous work of several students on the same surface more easily. The hinges, they are reinforced, not that the comings and goings of the bonnet put them in pain after only one week of use.
At the component level, if it is not the most powerful of Chromebooks, it is perfectly optimized for quick management of all tasks, including the simultaneous processing of multiple open Internet pages. Thus, the Intel Celeron N2840 processor coupled with 4 GB of RAM reveals a powerful combo. And if the internal memory is only 16 GB (but if you know a little Chromebooks, you know that it is not very serious to the extent that all data is kept in the cloud), it is expandable via a Micro-SD port.
The 11-inch screen, of course, is not very big. However, it is generally enough – and even very suitable – for a child, who can even watch videos with a certain comfort. Moreover, the speakers are rather powerful for a computer of this size, which makes it possible not to have to stick to the screen to hear something.
In terms of performance, Dell announces 8 hours of battery life, and many users say they have been able to use it even longer. This, coupled with its small weight of 1.4 kg, makes it an easily transportable model.
Note that, as it was initially designed for the teaching community, it has several advantages to learning, like the activity indicator system, designed to encourage student engagement. The child can thus activate a diode according to various codes: the blue light means that the student wants to participate, the red one has a question, and the yellow light indicates that the pupil needs more time for the exercise. Unless you buy this model for your class of students, however, I find it hard to find it useful at a personal level.
But that aside, it’s a great computer option for a kid, since it’s been specifically designed and built for him. If there is one big reproach to address to him, it is that, if it is very popular in the USA, it is unfortunately very difficult to find in our countries.
2. Lenovo Ideapad 120S-14IAP: Option Under Windows
As you will see, my selection is mostly made of Chromebooks, and I explain why in my shopping guide. But if you are absolutely rejected by Chrome OS or you are absolutely a fan of Windows, I found you a cheap Windows solution and not bad adapted to the smallest. Here’s why.
First, it should be noted that if it does not have as many reinforcements as the Dell above, it is rather solid for a Windows PC at this price, with a coating designed to withstand small shocks.
Again, I appreciate the work on the hinges, which also allow a 180 ° opening, which is great for the smaller ones, who tend to be generous in their opening movements.
The screen, this time, is 14 inches, which starts to be a little big in my opinion, but it keeps the advantage of lightness, with a weight of only 1.4 kg also.
At the component level, as is usually the case with Windows PCs, you can find it with all kinds of layouts and at all prices. I have selected here the most “basic” version (but also the cheapest) in that it seems to me quite sufficient for the use of a child, but nothing prevents you from going to see the others options. Note that if you want your child a PC capable of running the big video games recently, you can not also go beyond a real PC gamer, which is usually a much larger investment.
In the end, this version offers you an Intel Celeron N3350 processor coupled to 4 GB of RAM, with an Intel HD Graphics card. The whole is rather consistent to allow smooth operation of the computer, although, with Windows, it will necessarily be slower.
The internal memory of 32 GB, if it is very small for a Windows PC, has the merit of being able to be extended via the Micro-SD player. This is a very good point. And its autonomy, it is also the same rank, with also about 8 hours of use.
What I like about this model, which explains to a large extent that I propose it for children, is that it is stripped to the maximum of the bloatware usually found on Windows PCs.
That is to say? On any Windows computer, you have a set of pre-installed software companies that automatically launch – often invisibly – when the computer boots, making it cumbersome and slowing it down unnecessarily. Here, Lenovo has decided to strip this model, which only has the official Lenovo, McAfee LiveSafe and Microsoft Office applications excepted. The result is a PC a little more fluid, and with which we are less easily distracted by various tabs that appear impromptu.
Finally, a point that I find appreciable with this model is that it has a USB-C port, which is still quite rare on Windows PCs in this price range, but which makes it a model for which you have Long-term compatibility insurance with different instruments since USB-C is undoubtedly the future of high-tech connectivity.
In the end, with the Lenovo Ideapad 120s, you have a very good alternative to Chromebooks, for a really small price. It is a laptop easy to appropriate and handle moderately resistant, easily transportable and rather well thought out connectivity. The 14-inch screen can also delight your child if he intends his PC to watch videos.
The Best Mid-Range Kids Laptops
3. Acer Chromebook 11 CB311-8HT: A Very Neat Design
Here is the second Chromebook of my selection, and it is proposed by Acer. If you’re interested in the subject, you’ll find that the manufacturer is very active in the field of Chromebooks and as he was disappointed, in the past, with some of its models under Windows, as its Chromebooks are most often among the best in the market.
The first thing we notice with this model, which is a redesign of the famous Acer Chromebook 11, is that we see appear more noble materials, such as aluminum arranged around the keyboard, on the upper shell, and on the sides. The first advantage of aluminum is, of course, its resistance, but it also allows a lower weight: 1.19 kg, which makes it the lightest of my selection.
Personally, I find that the visual, with the effect of blue brushing, is very successful. It should, in any case, please children, much more likely than traditional white PCs, black or gray.
Unlike its predecessor, its 11-inch screen is, this time, touch. On the other hand, no opening angle widened on the horizon: your child will only be able to use it as a traditional computer and will have to take care of the hinges (even if they are well made).
On the component side, it adds significant improvements over the previous version, incorporating a newer and faster processor, the Intel Celeron N3350 (the same as Lenovo running on Windows), and a 2 GB to a RAM of 4 GB. The result is smooth navigation in all circumstances.
And of course, as its battery has also been improved, you can use it for ten hours without having to use the charger. Again, it’s nice if your kid has to take his computer on a trip or school.
The internal memory, it is 32 GB, expandable via Micro-SD. So you should not have any problem with that.
In the end, I would recommend this computer to those looking for a more original look, more noble and solid materials, and advanced components in the Chromebook. While it cannot open flat, but it still retains the advantage of the touch screen, which should please your child.
The Best High-End Child Laptops
4. Acer Spin 11 CP311-1HN: The Best High End
The first computer in this section is again a Chromebook presented by Acer and, in a nutshell, it combines just about all the best of all previous models, and even more.
At the design level first. We find with pleasure an aluminum chassis, which allows this Chromebook to be both lightweight (1.4 kg) and solid.
I exposed you, in the first section, two models whose hinges allow an opening to 180 °, pledge of a certain resistance against the assaults of our little brutes. What about hinges 360 °, allowing use in computer and tablet? That’s what this Chromebook offers you.
So, the 11-inch touch screen is here used optimally, in that you just need a reversion to use it completely as a tablet, which can be very pleasant at the level of note taking (when you have to integrate a diagram, for example), when it comes to viewing a video, or to play a game using the touch.
Its screen is very responsive and presents a quality image. But still, what makes the specificity of this model is that it is directly provided for purchase with its Wacom EMR stylus. This will allow your child to directly exploit the touch intensively, being able to go to more creativity and graphic works.
Component level, it is obviously not left behind, with its Intel Pentium N4200 processor, HD Graphics 500 graphics card, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, expandable via micro-SD card. This is probably the most powerful combo of my selection, and it does not suffer from any slowness problem even with a multitude of open web pages and videos running.
Another point more anecdotal in my opinion, but that can entertain your child: it has a dual camera, which allows to use it as well in PC mode tablet mode, making sessions skypes much more comfortable.
Finally, it also has a very comfortable autonomy of 10 hours.
In the end, this small Chromebook is perfect for a child: small, light and strong, it will withstand all transport, and its stylus will be a valuable tool for note-taking as for the development of creative arts. If I had to look for negative points, it would be that its lack of resistance against a Dell Chromebook 11, for example, which has it reinforced hinges and a splash-resistant keyboard (but which by cons is plastic).
5. Acer Chromebook 14 CB3-431: The Best 14 Inches Kids Laptop
So here’s a new Chromebook, but it differs from others in that it is a 14-inch model.
As I explained a little earlier, an 11-inch model, though it may be a bit minimal for an adult user (at least as the only one and main PC), seems to me perfectly adapted to the morphology of a child. But I can understand that this is still considered too small and that we want to move to a 14-inch screen, which is a good average among the various sizes of portable screens on the market.
And in this area, the Acer Chromebook 14 seems a choice for me, even if it is a little older (it dates from 2016). It is indeed still very current while being proposed today at a very affordable price.
Who says high-end model said quality materials and here we find with pleasure the aluminum, for a weight of 1.55 kg (the higher weight is justified of course by the size of the screen).
So certainly, it is neither reversible nor tactile. But this time it is a 1080p screen, with good brightness and an effective anti-glare system, which gives it good visibility even in the sun. It is an ideal notebook for viewing videos, even in cars where the sun often tends to disturb us.
Of course, with the increase in the size of the screen also happens an increase in the size of the keyboard, which is more comfortable to use for children a little older.
Side components, as it is a little older, it obviously does not ship the latest generations, but its Intel Celeron N3160 processor, coupled with an Intel HD Graphics 400 graphics card, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, it is still very powerful. The only complaint that could be addressed to him at this level is that he does not have a port allowing you to extend the memory. But with good cloud management, this should not be a problem.
Finally, it is the champion of autonomy of my selection, with no less than 12 hours on the clock, which is pretty incredible on a computer at 1080p!
In the end, even if it starts to date a little, the Acer Chromebook 14 CB3-431 continues to be a reference, thanks to it is material excellence and good components optimization /quality/autonomy. This is a great option for those interested in Chromebooks but would be put off by an 11-inch screen.
6. Acer R11 CB5-132T: A 360 ° Alternative
If the 360 ° reversion feature interests you, here is an alternative model to the Acer Spin 11 CP311-1HN, and continues to be very popular, the Acer R11.
Transportability level, we are still facing a compact and lightweight computer, with 1.4 kg. However, we find a plastic coating, but it is of good quality, and its white color can seduce some
Again, the keyboard is well optimized despite the small size of the computer, with enough spaced keys to provide a good typing comfort.
It is equipped with an Intel Celeron N3160 processor, coupled with 4 GB of RAM, which it optimizes very well, for a quick and smooth result in all circumstances. And despite its speed, it holds 8 to 10 hours without charge, which is very correct.
Its screen, in addition, offers rich and brilliant colors, which make the viewing of videos very pleasant, especially in tablet mode.
In the end, this Chromebook is an excellent choice for a child in that it is easily transportable, rather solid over time, very enduring, and easy to handle. But above all, the transformation into a tablet should delight your child, who will have a sense of having two high-tech objects in one. Nevertheless, I find that it suffers at the moment of two big defects.
On the one hand, given its fame, its price varies (very) strongly depending on demand. It is very easy to be fooled with a much higher price than that which can be offered only two days later.
Finally, if it was a reference in terms of the Chromebook 2 in 1 at its release, it suffers today to be caught by the competition, which is sometimes even within the brand, with the example of Acer Spin 11 CP311-1HN, which has the double advantage of stylus and aluminum construction.
